His story
At the time of care, Laurent is 8 years old and weighs 14 kg. He suffers from acute undernutrition and a serious disability. He has Cerebral Palsy (CP) as a result of numerous malaria episodes that he has contracted since 2019. Due to lack of financial means, his parents resorted to self-medication. In June 2020, he was hospitalized in emergency following a severe malaria attack (neurological form of malaria when left untreated). He was left in a coma for a few days in intensive care. Since waking up from his coma, he has suffered from severe neurological damage, including Cerebral Palsy. He has lost many of his motor and cognitive abilities. He can no longer stand or feed himself, for example. We met him while he was again suffering from a malaria episode (neurological form). He also presented oral mycosis and bedsores on his body. We decided to admit him to the Hospital of Tsévié where he was hospitalized for several weeks.
